State Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) has announced funding for pedestrian improvements in Chambersburg's Southgate area. The $650,000 funding allocation will support the construction of pedestrian enhancements on South Water Street within the former Southgate Shopping Center premises.

Kauffman emphasized the significance of pedestrian enhancements in the broader redevelopment initiative of transforming the former shopping center into a mixed-use residential neighborhood. He expressed his satisfaction in securing the funding, stating, "Pedestrian improvements are a key piece of the overall project to redevelop the former Southgate Shopping Center into a planned mixed-use residential neighborhood." Kauffman also mentioned his anticipation for the advancement of the improvement plan, saying, "It was my pleasure to advocate for this funding and I look forward to seeing the improvement plan progress forward."

The funding for this project has been approved from the Commonwealth Financing Authority's Multimodal Transportation Fund. This fund aims to provide grants that stimulate economic development and ensure a safe and efficient transportation system for Pennsylvania residents.

The initiative aligns with the goal of enhancing pedestrian infrastructure to support community development and create a more walkable environment in the Southgate area. The funding announcement signifies a step towards promoting sustainable and accessible urban spaces in Chambersburg.
