In a recent development, the state Senate has given the green light to a resolution put forth by Sen. Doug Mastriano, urging the governor to deploy the Pennsylvania National Guard to bolster security along Texas's southern border with Mexico as part of Operation Lone Star.

"Pennsylvania families are being harmed by the influx of immigrants and illegal drugs resulting from lax federal border security measures," expressed Sen. Mastriano, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He further highlighted the collaborative efforts of states in compensating for the federal government's shortcomings on this critical issue, stating, "States are working together to make up for the federal government’s failure on this important issue."

Under Senate Resolution 251, which received approval, Gov. Josh Shapiro is urged to extend the services of the Pennsylvania National Guard to Texas in support of Operation Lone Star. The initiative was launched by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in March 2021 to address the surging illegal immigration rates. Operation Lone Star aims to detect and deter illegal crossings, apprehend human traffickers and cartel members, and disrupt the flow of dangerous substances like fentanyl.

Sen. Mastriano stressed the significance of safeguarding the nation's southern border, noting, "Pennsylvanians have an interest in protecting our nation’s southern border and preventing an influx of immigrants and illegal drugs from reaching our communities." He also raised concerns about the origins of lethal drugs, stating, "Some of the fentanyl that is killing our kids is arriving from Mexico."

The move comes following Abbott's outreach to governors for assistance with Operation Lone Star, with 14 states already deploying personnel and resources to enhance border security. A recent report indicated that Pennsylvania is home to at least 251,000 illegal immigrants, with a financial burden exceeding $1.6 billion annually on taxpayers, surpassing the allocated budget for various state departments.
